Despite ongoing security threats in Plateau State, farmers in Mangu and Bokkos Local Government Areas are celebrating what they describe as one of their best Irish potato harvests in recent years.
The two areas, long plagued by sporadic attacks and displacements caused by unknown gunmen, have nonetheless witnessed an exceptional farming season. Farmers attribute this success to early and consistent rainfall, which significantly boosted yields.
“I thank God for the rains,” said Iliya, a farmer from Mangu. “The weather worked in our favour. Even with the insecurity, we managed to cultivate and harvest well.”
While celebrating the bumper harvest, many farmers expressed concerns over post-harvest losses, citing the absence of modern storage facilities as a major challenge. Without proper preservation measures, they fear a substantial portion of the produce could go to waste, undermining the gains of the season.
