The Commander of the 63 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Abdulmoshood Shonibare, says Delta State has witnessed significant security improvements in recent months, with a calmer atmosphere, fewer kidnapping cases, and reduced criminal activities.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday after the Delta State Security Council meeting chaired by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori at Government House, Asaba, Shonibare credited the progress to enhanced coordination among security agencies, traditional rulers, and local government authorities.
“Delta State is calmer than it was a few months ago, and we can all attest to this. Kidnapping cases have dropped drastically, and cultists no longer have a stronghold here,” he said.
He cited a recent joint rescue operation with the Police Special Anti-Kidnapping Squad in which two female students and one male student, kidnapped in separate incidents, were freed unharmed. The operation resulted in the killing of two suspected kidnappers and the recovery of two AK-47 rifles, magazines, and 16 rounds of ammunition.
Shonibare also disclosed that security forces have been intercepting fleeing criminals, including members of the proscribed IPOB group, attempting to hide in Asaba, Warri, and surrounding areas.
“Those who think Delta State is a safe haven should think twice. We are coming after them,” he warned.
On grassroots security, he said drug abuse and trafficking—identified as major drivers of crime—were being targeted through intensified operations. Recent visits by senior military officers, including the General Officer Commanding 6 Division, Major General E.E. Emeka, and close collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have strengthened anti-drug efforts in Ughelli, Abraka, Warri, and other high-risk areas.
The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, highlighted further achievements, including the neutralisation of multiple kidnap suspects, recovery of firearms such as AK-47 and pump-action rifles, and the seizure of ₦5.7 million in ransom money.
Olufemi assured residents of a peaceful festive season, noting that preparations for the ember months were underway. “Last year, Delta had one of its most peaceful Christmas celebrations. This year will be even better. People can return home to celebrate without fear,” he said.
Governor Oborevwori reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to infrastructure development, empowerment programmes, and strengthened security, assuring that all necessary measures would be in place to protect lives and property as the year draws to a close.
