The Nigerian Army on Tuesday commenced a three-day social media awareness campaign aimed at enhancing cybersecurity consciousness and promoting responsible online behaviour among its personnel.
The programme, organised by the Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare Command, is taking place at the Lt.-Gen. T.A. Lagbaja Hall from March 24 to March 26.
Declaring the campaign open, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Division, Maj.-Gen. Abubakar Wase, said the initiative is designed to equip personnel with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the complexities of the digital space.
Represented by the Deputy Chief of Staff, Administration, 1 Division, Col. Ikechukwu Akabike, Wase noted that social media has become a powerful tool that shapes public perception, influences security dynamics, and impacts operational effectiveness.
He emphasised that understanding both the opportunities and risks associated with social media is critical for military personnel in safeguarding national security and maintaining institutional integrity.
According to him, the campaign will cover key areas such as the impact of social media on security operations, digital footprint management, cybersecurity best practices, and the role of online platforms in national defence.
“The Nigerian Army recognises that social media is a double-edged sword. While it provides opportunities for communication, engagement, and intelligence gathering, it also presents serious risks if not properly managed,” he said.
Wase urged participants to actively engage in the sessions, interact with experts, and make the most of the platform to improve their knowledge and professional competence.
He also commended the Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare Command for its proactive efforts in promoting responsible social media use and strengthening cyber awareness within the force.
The GOC further stressed the importance of continuous learning and adaptation in response to evolving digital trends, noting that the knowledge gained would enhance both individual performance and overall operational efficiency.
He expressed confidence that the campaign would contribute to building a more informed, vigilant, and digitally resilient military force.
The programme is part of ongoing efforts by the Nigerian Army to integrate modern cyber strategies into its operations and strengthen national security, featuring lectures and interactive sessions for participants.
