Air Vice Marshal Femi John Femi remains one of the most distinguished officers in the history of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), earning a place in the annals of military aviation as the first qualified helicopter pilot to rise to the position of Chief of the Air Staff (CAS).

Born on December 30, 1945, in Egbeda-Kabba, present-day Kogi State, he began a remarkable military career when he enlisted as an officer cadet in the Nigerian Air Force on July 1, 1965.

Driven by a passion for aviation and service, he underwent pilot training in Germany and qualified as a helicopter pilot in March 1967. He was subsequently commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on June 1, 1967, marking the beginning of a distinguished journey in military aviation.

Throughout his career, Air Vice Marshal Femi distinguished himself through continuous professional development. He attended several advanced military and aviation courses, including helicopter conversion training in Germany and France, staff training at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, and the prestigious United States Air Force Air War College, where he received an award for academic excellence.

His outstanding leadership qualities earned him a series of strategic appointments within the Nigerian Air Force. He served as Commander of the 301 Flying Training School, Commander of the 305 Flying Training School, Commander of NAF Base Port Harcourt, and Air Officer Inspections at NAF Headquarters. He also served as Senior Directing Staff and Acting Deputy Commandant at the National War College, where he contributed significantly to the training of senior military officers.

In September 1993, he was appointed the 11th Chief of the Air Staff, becoming the first helicopter pilot to occupy the highest professional office in the Nigerian Air Force. He served in that capacity until his retirement in 1996.

As Chief of the Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Femi prioritized pilot training, operational efficiency, and the professional development of personnel. His tenure was marked by efforts to strengthen the operational readiness of the Air Force and enhance its institutional capacity.

Today, Air Vice Marshal Femi John Femi remains a respected elder statesman of the military profession, enjoying a well-deserved retirement after decades of dedicated service to Nigeria.

His pioneering achievements, exemplary leadership, and unwavering commitment to national service continue to inspire generations of military officers and aviation professionals.
