A coalition of civil society organisations has called on the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, over allegations that his activities pose a threat to Nigeria’s national security.

The demand was made during a rally held in Abuja by the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations for Good Governance in Nigeria, where members expressed support for the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and its ongoing security and economic reforms.

Speaking at the event, the National Chairman of Nigeria Citizens Watch for Good Governance, Collins Eshiofeh, commended the Federal Government for implementing policies under the Renewed Hope Agenda, including the approval of a new national minimum wage. He argued that the administration should be allowed to focus on governance and national development without unnecessary distractions.

The coalition also passed a vote of confidence in President Tinubu and the Director-General of the DSS, Oluwatosin Ajayi, praising their efforts in combating terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security challenges confronting the country.

Eshiofeh, however, urged security agencies to closely examine the activities of Sowore, alleging that some of his actions and public statements could undermine national stability. He called on the DSS and other relevant authorities to take appropriate steps within the ambit of the law if any evidence of wrongdoing is established.

According to him, national security remains a collective responsibility that should not be compromised by any individual or group, regardless of political affiliation or status.

He maintained that while democratic societies thrive on dissent and constructive criticism, such freedoms should be exercised responsibly and within the confines of the law.

“The sovereignty, unity and stability of Nigeria must remain paramount. Security agencies should continue to be vigilant and ensure that anyone found acting against the interests of the nation is held accountable through lawful processes,” he said.

The coalition further urged President Tinubu and security institutions to sustain ongoing efforts aimed at protecting lives and property across the country while upholding democratic principles and the rule of law.

It also called on security agencies to discharge their constitutional responsibilities professionally, impartially and without political bias, stressing that justice and fairness are essential to national cohesion and public trust.

According to the group, Nigerians deserve a nation where public safety is guaranteed, citizens’ rights are respected and the institutions of government function effectively for the common good.

The coalition reaffirmed its commitment to promoting good governance, accountability, civic participation and constructive engagement in the nation’s democratic process.

Observers at the rally noted that the call reflects growing concerns among some groups over the balance between freedom of expression and national security, a debate that continues to generate public interest across the country.

The DSS has not officially responded to the coalition’s request, while Sowore has yet to issue a statement on the allegations raised at the rally.
