The Nigerian Navy has recorded a major breakthrough in its ongoing fight against crude oil theft, intercepting a large quantity of illegally refined petroleum products and arresting eight suspects in Rivers State.
The operation, conducted under Operation Delta Sentinel, took place across the Degema, Ogbogoro, and Ogbologo axis following credible intelligence on illegal oil activities in the area.
Personnel attached to NNS Pathfinder deployed an anti-crude oil theft patrol team, which successfully intercepted two wooden boats carrying about 44,000 litres of suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).
During the operation, eight suspects linked to the illicit trade were apprehended, while several armed accomplices reportedly fled upon sighting the naval personnel.
The Navy confirmed that the suspects and the seized products are currently in custody and will be handed over to relevant authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Service noted that the operation aligns with the directive of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, who has mandated intensified efforts against crude oil theft, illegal bunkering, and other maritime crimes.
Reaffirming its commitment, the Nigerian Navy stated that it will sustain the momentum of Operation Delta Sentinel through intelligence-driven operations, enhanced patrols, and stronger inter-agency collaboration aimed at safeguarding Nigeria’s economic assets and maritime environment.
