The Nigerian Navy has recorded a major success in its ongoing crackdown on crude oil theft, intercepting a large volume of illegally refined petroleum products and arresting eight suspects in Rivers State.
The operation was conducted under Operation Delta Sentinel across the Degema, Ogbogoro, and Ogbologo axis, following credible intelligence on illicit oil activities within the area.
Personnel attached to NNS Pathfinder deployed an anti-crude oil theft patrol team, which intercepted two wooden boats carrying about 44,000 litres of suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).
During the raid, eight suspects were apprehended, while several armed accomplices reportedly fled on sighting the naval operatives.
The Navy confirmed that the suspects and seized products are in custody and will be handed over to relevant authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The operation, according to the Service, aligns with the directive of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, who has ordered intensified efforts against crude oil theft, illegal bunkering, and other maritime crimes.
Reaffirming its commitment, the Navy stated it will sustain the momentum of Operation Delta Sentinel through intelligence-driven operations, enhanced patrols, and stronger inter-agency collaboration aimed at protecting Nigeria’s economic assets and maritime environment.
