The Nigerian Army has dismissed as false and misleading an online report alleging that soldiers are threatening mutiny over issues relating to salaries and allowances.
In a statement addressing the publication, the Army described the report, circulated by Sahara Reporters, as deliberately sensational and aimed at undermining public confidence in the Armed Forces as well as national security.
The Nigerian Army stated unequivocally that there has been no threat of mutiny at any time within its ranks. It stressed that mutiny is a serious offence under military law and is completely incompatible with the values, discipline and professionalism that define the institution. According to the Army, its personnel remain loyal to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces.
The statement noted that the report relied entirely on anonymous and unverifiable claims disseminated through unofficial channels. Such narratives, the Army said, do not reflect the views, conduct or disposition of its officers and soldiers, who are trained to address grievances through established internal procedures rather than public platforms.
Clarifying issues surrounding remuneration, the Army explained that promotion increments represent only a fraction of overall military earnings and should not be mischaracterised as total pay. Military remuneration, it said, includes consolidated salaries, rank based allowances, operational allowances, field and hardship allowances, as well as other entitlements that vary depending on deployment, qualifications and assigned responsibilities.
The Nigerian Army further stated that, in collaboration with the Armed Forces of Nigeria and relevant government authorities, it continues to implement structured welfare reforms. These include periodic salary reviews, improved operational allowances, better accommodation, enhanced medical services and comprehensive insurance packages for troops and their families. Matters relating to allowances, the statement added, are regularly reviewed within approved government frameworks.
According to the Army, the Chief of Army Staff, upon assumption of duty, initiated constructive engagements with the appropriate authorities on issues of troop welfare, efforts which are already producing positive and progressive outcomes.
The statement also refuted claims of neglect, noting that the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has consistently demonstrated commitment to the welfare and operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces, especially in the face of evolving security challenges.
Reaffirming its position, the Nigerian Army described itself as a cohesive, disciplined and professional force, fully focused on its constitutional mandate of defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and supporting internal security operations. It warned that attempts to portray the institution as unstable or lawless are irresponsible and detrimental to national security.
The Army urged members of the public to disregard unfounded reports and rely on official communication channels for accurate and verified information concerning the Armed Forces, particularly the Nigerian Army.
