The 13 Brigade Nigerian Army, Calabar, in partnership with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Cross River State, on September 30, 2025, organized a sensitization lecture themed “Human Rights and the Military.” The initiative forms part of the Brigade’s efforts to strengthen civil-military relations and promote respect for human rights in military operations.
Delivering the lecture, the NHRC State Coordinator, Mr. Remi Odinaka Ajuga, commended the Nigerian Army for its professionalism and increasing commitment to protecting citizens’ rights while carrying out constitutional duties. He emphasized that human rights are inherent, inalienable, and fundamental to all individuals, stressing that upholding them is central to the Army’s legitimacy and operational success. He further advised troops to balance operational demands with respect for fundamental rights, noting that adherence builds trust, enhances credibility, and fosters long-term mission effectiveness.
In his remarks, the Commander 13 Brigade, Brigadier General M. O. Ibrahim, thanked the NHRC for its collaboration and reaffirmed the Brigade’s commitment to discipline, integrity, and respect for the rights of Nigerians. He cautioned troops never to intimidate or abuse civilians, urging them to always seek guidance from superiors whenever in doubt. According to him, respecting human dignity minimizes harm to civilians, strengthens public confidence, and enhances the Army’s image in operations.
Brigadier General Ibrahim described the lecture as timely and consistent with the Chief of Army Staff’s command philosophy, which seeks to consolidate the transformation of the Nigerian Army into a well-motivated, combat-ready force capable of discharging its constitutional duties in a joint and multi-agency environment.
The event featured an interactive session, presentation of a plaque to the guest lecturer, and a group photograph. It also forms part of 13 Brigade’s continuous training and enlightenment programmes aimed at enhancing professionalism and fostering stronger community relations.
