Nigeria Police Force has launched an investigation into the conduct of officers captured in a viral video allegedly engaging in unprofessional behaviour during a stop-and-search operation along the Lagos–Benin Expressway.

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun Disu, has directed the Commissioner of Police in Ondo State to carry out a comprehensive and transparent inquiry into the incident to determine the extent of each officer’s involvement and ensure appropriate disciplinary measures are taken where necessary.

The directive was disclosed on Saturday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Aniete Iniedu, following widespread circulation of the video, which reportedly showed officers making derogatory ethnic remarks and behaving in a manner considered inconsistent with professional policing standards.

According to the police spokesperson, the officers involved have been identified and taken into custody pending the conclusion of internal disciplinary proceedings.

The affected personnel comprise one Assistant Superintendent of Police and three Inspectors, all of whom are currently undergoing administrative processes in line with established police regulations.

The Force Headquarters stressed that the conduct displayed in the video does not represent the values, ethics and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force.

The statement further emphasised that ethnic profiling, discriminatory behaviour and disrespect towards members of the public are unacceptable and will not be condoned under any circumstances.

The police leadership reiterated its commitment to holding officers accountable for actions that undermine public trust and the reputation of the institution.

The Inspector-General also assured Nigerians that the investigation would be conducted fairly and transparently, with appropriate sanctions imposed on any officer found culpable.

The Force reaffirmed its dedication to ethical, citizen-focused policing and pledged to continue implementing reforms aimed at strengthening professionalism, discipline and respect for human rights.

The incident has generated public attention on social media, with many Nigerians calling for greater accountability and improved conduct by law enforcement personnel during routine operations.

Police authorities expressed confidence that the ongoing investigation would reinforce the Force’s commitment to fairness, integrity and responsible service delivery across the country.
