Two Soldiers Killed as Boko Haram Strikes Military Base in Borno

Boko Haram insurgents have struck again in Borno State, killing two Nigerian soldiers in a brazen early-morning attack on a military base and forcing several others to flee into neighboring Cameroon, according to security sources.

The assault, carried out on Sunday, targeted an outpost in the volatile northeastern region and underscored the persistent difficulty of quelling the extremist group’s activities. Witnesses and security operatives reported that the attackers stormed the base with heavy weapons, quickly overwhelming the stationed troops.

In the fierce exchange of gunfire, two soldiers were killed, while others—outmatched by the insurgents’ numbers and firepower—retreated across the border to seek refuge. Before withdrawing, the militants seized weapons, ammunition, and supplies, then torched sections of the facility, leaving behind significant destruction.

Security officials described the operation as “highly coordinated,” noting that Boko Haram fighters exploited the element of surprise to devastating effect. “The soldiers fought courageously, but the attackers were too many and heavily armed,” a source said.

Those who escaped into Cameroon have since been returned to Nigeria, though the exact number of repatriated troops remains unconfirmed. The incident has renewed public anger and concern, with residents of nearby communities urging authorities to bolster military presence and resources in the region.

“We live with fear every single day,” lamented Aisha Mohammed, a local villager. “The government must do more to protect us.”

The attack comes amid a wider pattern of violence across northern Nigeria, including a recent incident in Zamfara State where kidnappers executed victims who could not afford ransom payments. Despite repeated government assurances of progress, Boko Haram’s continued capacity to mount deadly operations raises questions about the effectiveness of current counterinsurgency strategies.

The Nigerian Army has yet to issue an official statement, but sources indicate that a military pursuit is underway to track down the assailants and re-secure the affected area.
