In a proactive effort to address the pressing issue of insecurity in Plateau State, Major General Folusho Oyinlola, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division and Commander Operation SAFE HAVEN, has called for enhanced collaboration between security agencies and key stakeholders. This pivotal call to action was made during a recent courtesy visit by executives from the Retired Army, Navy, and Air Force Officers Association (RANAO) Plateau State Chapter and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) North Central Zone at the Maxwell Khobe Cantonment on March 4, 2025.
The meeting underscored the importance of unity among military forces, retired officers, and disaster management agencies to combat the growing threat of insecurity and criminality that has been troubling the region. Major General Oyinlola welcomed the RANAO executives, expressing gratitude for their past sacrifices and contributions to national security. “Your sacrifices and contributions to the defense and security of our nation remain an enduring legacy,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the values and professionalism instilled in the armed forces by RANAO.
Recognizing the significant role RANAO plays in nation-building and mentoring the next generation of military personnel, Maj Gen Oyinlola urged for improved engagement between active service members and veterans. “RANAO serves as a bridge between the present and the past. By strengthening our ties, we can better address the security challenges in Plateau State,” he affirmed, pledging his support to bolster the existing relationship between the association and 3 Division.
Colonel BM Gyang (retired), the state chairman of RANAO, expressed appreciation for the warm reception from the GOC. He voiced optimism regarding General Oyinlola’s capabilities to forge a collaborative relationship aimed at rapidly resolving security challenges in the region. “We are hopeful that under your leadership, we can work together effectively to elevate security efforts in Plateau State,” Gyang remarked. He also advocated for support in establishing a permanent structure to serve as the state headquarters for RANAO and called for meticulous planning for the upcoming RANAO national annual general meeting in Jos.
The visit also marked the introduction of Mr. Adebiyi Babatunde Razaq, the new Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, who recognized the vital partnership between NEMA and the Nigerian Army. “The Army has always provided security to our personnel during operations, allowing us to effectively discharge our responsibilities during crises,” he noted. Razaq echoed the need for a stronger partnership between NEMA and the military, particularly in safeguarding the lives and properties of citizens.
In response to this collaborative spirit, Major General Oyinlola acknowledged the critical joint efforts during past crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic and recent disaster responses, such as the floods in Maiduguri. “The Nigerian Army has demonstrated unwavering commitment to national security and humanitarian aid,” he stated, highlighting the successes of combined operations with NEMA during various emergency situations. The GOC pointed out the effective response during a recent secondary school building collapse, reiterating the need for stronger inter-agency cooperation to minimize losses during disasters.
The GOC emphasized the essential role of the military in disaster management, particularly the designation of several armed forces units as Disaster Response Units (DRUs). He called for ongoing collaboration in training and capacity building to ensure preparedness for unforeseen events. “The need for strong collaboration cannot be overstated. We must work together to enlighten communities about how to respond effectively during emergencies,” he asserted.
The meeting concluded with a presentation of souvenirs, signing of the visitors’ register, and a group photograph to commemorate the occasion. This assembly of military leadership and veteran representatives symbolizes a collective commitment to enhancing security and disaster management in Plateau State.
As Major General Oyinlola embarks on his tour of duty, the focus on collaboration between active military personnel, veterans, and disaster management agencies signifies a strategic and unified approach to combating insecurity and safeguarding the well-being of the community.
This renewed commitment to partnership and collaboration among security agencies and stakeholders in Plateau State reflects a vital step towards ensuring a safer environment for all citizens, reinforcing the belief that united efforts are key to overcoming the challenges faced in today’s complex security landscape.
