Senior Nigerian military leaders on March 11, 2026 convened at Ship House in Abuja for a high level operational review of the ongoing counterinsurgency campaign in the North East. The meeting brought together top defence officials to assess the current security situation and evaluate the progress of military operations against insurgent groups operating in the region.
Among those present were the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, and other Service Chiefs. The gathering provided an opportunity for the defence leadership to exchange operational updates and review strategies aimed at strengthening the effectiveness of ongoing military efforts.
Discussions at the meeting centred on improving coordination among the armed services, enhancing intelligence sharing, and intensifying intelligence driven operations against terrorist networks. The leaders also examined ways to strengthen collaboration among different security agencies involved in the fight against insurgency.
The defence chiefs emphasised the importance of maintaining a unified and integrated military response in order to sustain pressure on insurgent groups and prevent them from regrouping. They also highlighted the need to consolidate recent operational gains made by the armed forces across several parts of the North East.
At the end of the meeting, the defence leadership reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ commitment to protecting civilian communities, restoring stability in affected areas and ensuring lasting peace in the region through sustained and coordinated security operations.
