The Nigerian Navy has applauded the conviction and sentencing of nine individuals by the Federal High Court in Uyo for crude oil theft, describing the judgment as a major milestone in the nation’s ongoing battle against economic sabotage. The convicts were sentenced on 14 September 2026 to five years imprisonment on Count One and 10 years imprisonment on Count Two, without the option of a fine.
The suspects were arrested by the Nigerian Navy on 7 February 2026 during an intelligence led operation while allegedly siphoning crude oil from the ASABO-D oil wellhead located in Ibeno Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. According to the Navy, the successful prosecution and conviction of the offenders demonstrate the effectiveness of coordinated efforts among security agencies, prosecutors and the judiciary in addressing crimes that threaten Nigeria’s economic stability.
The development comes amid intensified anti crude oil theft operations being conducted under Operation DELTA SENTINEL, the Nigerian Navy’s flagship campaign against illegal bunkering and other forms of economic sabotage. Since its launch in January 2026, the operation has relied on intelligence driven surveillance, precision interdictions and sustained maritime security measures across the Niger Delta.
The Navy disclosed that the operation has led to the dismantling of more than 241 illegal refining sites, the disruption of several organised criminal networks, the recovery of over 6.44 million litres of suspected stolen crude oil and illegally refined petroleum products, as well as the arrest of more than 230 suspects. These achievements, it noted, underscore the Service’s determination to protect critical national infrastructure, safeguard the nation’s hydrocarbon resources and strengthen energy security.
According to the Navy, the renewed operational successes are driven by the strategic leadership of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, whose emphasis on intelligence led operations, inter agency cooperation and enhanced maritime domain awareness has significantly improved the Service’s ability to combat maritime crime. The efforts are also aligned with the Federal Government’s objective of increasing Nigeria’s crude oil production to 2.5 million barrels per day by 2027, thereby supporting economic growth and national development.
The Service stressed that operational successes achieve their full strategic impact only when they culminate in successful prosecution and conviction. Consequently, it commended the Federal High Court and the Department of State Services for their professionalism and dedication in ensuring the successful conclusion of the case.
The Nigerian Navy further emphasised that the fight against crude oil theft requires seamless cooperation across the entire criminal justice system, from intelligence gathering and law enforcement to prosecution and judicial determination. It therefore called for the accelerated hearing and resolution of pending crude oil theft cases to strengthen deterrence, promote accountability and consolidate gains recorded in the sector.
Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding the nation’s maritime environment, the Navy warned individuals, groups and criminal syndicates involved in crude oil theft and related offences to desist immediately. It noted that the conviction serves as a clear indication that offenders can no longer hide behind the remoteness of oil producing communities, waterways or offshore installations to evade justice.
The Service also appealed to host communities and law abiding citizens to continue supporting security agencies by providing timely and credible information on activities that threaten critical oil and gas infrastructure. It maintained that community cooperation remains indispensable in denying criminal elements the support and freedom of movement required to sustain illegal operations.
Going forward, the Nigerian Navy pledged to sustain its operational momentum in protecting Nigeria’s maritime domain, securing critical oil and gas infrastructure and supporting legitimate economic activities. The Service reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration with the judiciary, sister services, security agencies and other stakeholders in advancing national objectives on increased oil production and the growth of the blue economy.
