The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), has unveiled 14 ViniApex Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles and commissioned the newly completed Armed Forces Event Centre in Abuja as part of ongoing efforts to enhance the operational capabilities and institutional development of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

Speaking during the ceremony in Abuja, the Defence Minister described the projects as critical investments aimed at improving troop protection, operational effectiveness and the overall welfare of military personnel.

According to him, modern military forces require not only advanced equipment but also quality infrastructure that supports professional development, strategic planning and institutional growth.

General Musa said the acquisition of the 14 MRAP vehicles demonstrates the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the safety and combat readiness of personnel deployed in various operational theatres across the country.

He noted that the specialised armoured vehicles are designed to provide enhanced protection against landmines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), ambushes and other battlefield threats commonly encountered during military operations.

The minister explained that improved mobility and protection are essential for troops operating in hostile and unpredictable environments, adding that the vehicles would significantly boost the military’s capacity to respond effectively to emerging security challenges.

“As security threats continue to evolve, the government remains committed to providing the Armed Forces with the equipment, technology and resources necessary to accomplish their missions while ensuring the safety of the men and women defending the nation,” he stated.

General Musa also highlighted the significance of the newly commissioned Armed Forces Event Centre, describing it as a strategic facility that will support military ceremonies, defence engagements, strategic conferences and other professional activities.

The state-of-the-art facility, which can accommodate approximately 1,500 guests, is expected to serve as a central venue for events aimed at fostering collaboration, professionalism, military tradition and esprit de corps among members of the Armed Forces.

According to the minister, the centre represents more than a physical structure; it reflects the government’s commitment to providing befitting facilities for military personnel who continue to serve the country with dedication and sacrifice.

He commended all individuals and organisations involved in the conception, construction and completion of the project, noting that their contributions had helped deliver an important asset to the nation’s defence community.

General Musa further emphasised that every military facility commissioned and every operational platform acquired represents a significant investment made on behalf of the Nigerian people.

He therefore urged personnel responsible for operating and maintaining the new assets to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, discipline, accountability and stewardship to ensure their long-term effectiveness and sustainability.

The Defence Minister reiterated the Federal Government’s determination to continue strengthening Nigeria’s defence architecture through strategic investments in personnel welfare, infrastructure development and modern military equipment.

He expressed confidence that the acquisition of the MRAP vehicles and the commissioning of the Armed Forces Event Centre would contribute significantly to improving operational efficiency, troop protection and the overall effectiveness of the Armed Forces in safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The event was attended by senior military officers, defence officials and other stakeholders who described the projects as important milestones in the ongoing modernisation and transformation of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
