Kebbi Hisbah Board releases two women after arrest over dressing complaint in Birnin Kebbi

The Hisbah Board in Kebbi State has released two women who were earlier taken into custody over allegations of indecent dressing in the Badariya area of Birnin Kebbi, following counselling on modest conduct and community values.

The Director of the Kebbi State Hisbah Board, Surajo Usman, confirmed the development in a statement issued to the News Agency of Nigeria in Birnin Kebbi on Sunday.

He explained that the board received a complaint on Friday, 8 May, from residents of Badariya who alleged that some women living in a house within the area were seen wearing what was considered inappropriate clothing in public spaces, which raised concern among members of the community.

According to him, Hisbah officers were deployed to investigate the report and ascertain the facts on the ground. During the operation, two women were identified and taken in for questioning.

Usman stated that during interrogation, the women acknowledged the incident but insisted there was no harmful intention behind their actions. They reportedly explained that the prevailing hot weather influenced their choice of clothing for comfort and ventilation.

He added that the women expressed regret over the incident and gave assurances that they would not repeat such behaviour.

The Hisbah Board counselled them on the importance of maintaining modesty, moral discipline and respect for local and religious norms, including adherence to appropriate dressing standards even within private settings.

Following the intervention, the women were released and advised to conduct themselves in line with community expectations.

Usman further urged residents to support moral guidance efforts and cooperate with authorities in promoting peace, order and acceptable social conduct across communities in the state.
