The Lagos State Government has announced the emergency closure of the outbound section of Eko Bridge for structural safety investigations and essential repair works.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the closure will take effect from Tuesday, 12 May 2026. The affected corridor covers the stretch between Apongbon and Ijora Olopa.
He explained that while the outbound carriageway will be closed to facilitate inspection and repairs, the inbound lane towards Lagos Island will remain open to vehicular movement. Motorists are advised to make use of the Third Mainland Bridge as an alternative route during the period of the closure.
The government further stated that traffic management and security personnel will be deployed along diversion routes to reduce congestion and maintain orderly movement of vehicles.
The announcement follows earlier federal directives ordering the immediate closure of parts of Eko Bridge as part of wider structural assessments linked to planned works on the Carter Bridge. The Minister of Works, David Umahi, had disclosed that underwater evaluations revealed significant structural concerns affecting key bridge infrastructure in Lagos.
Eko Bridge remains one of the major transport links between Lagos Island and the mainland, alongside Carter Bridge and Third Mainland Bridge, playing a critical role in daily commuter and commercial movement across the state.
