Gunmen Kill Son of Osun Accord Party Women Leader Amid Political Blame Game

The son of the Accord Party Women Leader in Irewole Local Government Area of Osun State, identified as Kolade Eluyera, has been killed by suspected gunmen in a violent attack that has triggered political recriminations and renewed security concerns in the state.

The Osun State Police Command confirmed the recovery of a lifeless body in Ikire on Friday night, stating that the deceased sustained gunshot wounds. The Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, said investigations had commenced and additional personnel had been deployed to the area to maintain order and gather intelligence.

He added that efforts were ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, noting that those who brought the corpse were being engaged to provide further information to aid the investigation.

The incident, however, has taken on a political dimension. The Imole Campaign Council, which is backing the re election bid of Governor Ademola Adeleke, called for a thorough investigation, alleging that the attack occurred near the Onireke Mosque area in Ikire and was carried out by suspected political thugs linked to the All Progressives Congress.

The allegation was firmly rejected by the media and publicity committee of the Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji Governorship Election Campaign Council. Its co chairman, Kola Olabisi, urged restraint and cautioned against politicising a criminal investigation, insisting that security agencies should be allowed to determine those responsible.

In a strongly worded statement, Pelumi Olajengbesi of the Imole Campaign Council alleged that the killing followed repeated security alerts and complaints previously lodged with the police in Ikire regarding kidnapping, intimidation, and attacks targeting members of the Accord Party in the area. He claimed that inadequate response by security agencies contributed to the escalation of violence.

Olajengbesi described the situation as alarming and a threat to democratic stability, while extending condolences to the bereaved family and the Accord Party. He also called for an independent investigation by the Inspector General of Police and the Department of State Services.

He further argued that rising political tensions in the state reflected deeper frustrations and warned that continued violence could undermine public peace and constitutional order.

In response, Kola Olabisi dismissed the claims as politically motivated and inflammatory, accusing the campaign council of spreading misinformation. He maintained that the allegations were unfounded and capable of disturbing public peace.

Olabisi further defended the APC governorship candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, describing him as a disciplined and non violent political figure, while urging all parties to allow law enforcement agencies to conduct a proper and impartial investigation into the killing.
