The Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of a serving member of the National Youth Service Corps, Abdulsamad Jamiu, during a security operation following a robbery incident in Abuja.
Jamiu was fatally injured in the early hours of 25 April 2026 at Shagari Estate in the Dei Dei area of the Federal Capital Territory.
The Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Headquarters Guards Brigade, Lieutenant Olawuyi Odunola, disclosed the development in a statement on Sunday. He explained that troops of the Guards Brigade Quick Response Group, while on routine night patrol, responded to a distress call regarding an armed robbery in the area.
According to him, upon arrival at the scene, the troops came under gunfire from fleeing suspects, leading to a brief exchange. During the incident, Jamiu was caught in the crossfire and later died from his injuries despite efforts to stabilise the situation and protect civilians.
Odunola noted that the situation was initially volatile as troops worked to repel the attackers and secure the area for residents.
He stated that the Commander of the Guards Brigade, along with officers and personnel, has extended condolences to the family of the deceased, the NYSC and all those affected by the incident.
The Army has initiated a comprehensive investigation to determine the precise circumstances surrounding the fatality, with assurances that the findings will be made public.
He added that the remains of the deceased have been deposited at Kubwa General Hospital and handed over to the appropriate authorities.
The Guards Brigade reaffirmed its commitment to the protection of lives and property within the Federal Capital Territory, indicating that operational procedures will be reviewed to strengthen civilian safety. Residents were also urged to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies.
