Federal Fire Service Pledges Stronger Emergency Response as Interior Ministry Concludes 2026 Sectoral Retreat

The Federal Fire Service has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening emergency response, enforcing fire safety regulations, and improving the protection of lives and property across the country following the conclusion of the 2026 Sectoral Retreat of the Federal Ministry of Interior in Abuja.
The retreat brought together heads and senior officials of agencies under the Ministry to review institutional performance, promote accountability, and align operational strategies with the Federal Government’s service delivery goals for the year ahead.
A major highlight of the final day of the retreat was the signing of the 2026 Performance Contract Bonds by heads of agencies. The Controller-General of the Federal Fire Service, Olumode Samuel Adeyemi, joined other agency leaders in endorsing the agreement, which outlines specific Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and measurable service delivery targets for 2026.
For the Federal Fire Service, the performance contract represents a renewed institutional commitment to strengthening fire prevention systems, expanding rescue and emergency response capabilities, improving response time, and intensifying public awareness on fire safety nationwide. It also supports ongoing reforms aimed at modernising firefighting operations, enhancing personnel capacity through specialised training, and strengthening partnerships with relevant stakeholders in safety regulation and disaster management.
Adeyemi noted that the performance contract would further drive transparency, operational efficiency, and measurable results within the Service, ensuring that fire and rescue services are delivered more effectively to communities across the country.
He added that the implementation of the performance targets would lead to a more responsive Federal Fire Service, improved safety enforcement, and stronger protection of lives and property, while also increasing the visibility of fire safety institutions in communities nationwide.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, urged the heads of agencies to remain focused on delivering quality services to Nigerians, stressing the need for accountability and results-driven leadership within the Ministry.
According to the minister, “Our eyes must not be taken off the ball. Nigerians deserve the country they desire, and delivering it is not a choice but an obligation.”
Tunji-Ojo also called on the Federal Fire Service to strengthen its role within the country’s emergency response system, urging the agency to expand its presence and responsiveness so that citizens can always rely on timely assistance whenever emergencies occur. He emphasised that the Service must continue to serve as a critical support system for Nigerians in times of distress.
