The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Gombe State Command, commemorated the 2026 International Civil Defence Day with a series of impactful activities across the state.
The celebration commenced with a symbolic route march that started from the State Command Headquarters, moved through major streets in the city centre, and returned to the headquarters. The exercise was followed by a medical outreach organised by the Civil Defence Officers Wives Association (CDOWA), which provided free medical services to officers, men, and members of the host community.
Earlier in the day, the Deputy Commandant of Corps, DCC Abubakar Y. Muri, represented the State Commandant at a special Jumat prayer held at the Gombe Central Mosque, where prayers were offered for the Corps and the nation, seeking divine guidance and protection. A special thanksgiving service was also held at ECWA Good News Church, bringing together officers and men for worship and rededication to duty.
In his remarks, the State Commandant, Commandant Idris, who was represented by DCC Gomna Bulus, expressed profound gratitude to God for the protection granted to officers and men of the Command. He acknowledged their unwavering dedication and sacrifices, which have significantly enhanced safety and stability across communities in Gombe State.
Speaking on this year’s theme, “Managing Environmental Risk for a Resilient and Sustainable Future,” the Commandant noted that the Corps’ mandate goes beyond physical security to include the protection of critical national assets, disaster management, and environmental risk control. He emphasised the need for a proactive approach through strengthened early warning systems, community sensitisation on environmental protection, strict enforcement of relevant regulations, and sustained collaboration with stakeholders to mitigate climate-related risks.
He further called on traditional rulers, community leaders, youth groups, religious institutions, private organisations, and the media to partner with the NSCDC in building safer, greener, and more resilient communities. The Commandant also commended officers and men for their gallantry, professionalism, and commitment to duty, urging them to continue upholding the core values of discipline, integrity, and service to humanity.
The celebration concluded with a novelty volleyball match between the State Command Headquarters and the Area Commands and Divisions. The Area Commands and Divisions emerged victorious with a 2–1 win in a best-of-three contest.
