The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Sokoto State Command, has convened a strategic meeting with key stakeholders to address the persistent damage to fibre optic cables and other critical national assets across the state.
The meeting, led by the State Commandant, CC EA Ajayi, focused on the growing disruption of telecommunications services caused by indiscriminate excavation along road construction corridors and development sites.
Speaking during the session, the Commandant stressed that the action aligns with the 2024 Critical National Infrastructure protection directive issued by the Office of the National Security Adviser, which mandates the Corps to safeguard Critical National Assets and Infrastructure nationwide.
He noted that the continued destruction of fibre optic cables has severely disrupted internet services, banking operations, commercial activities, and other essential services, thereby affecting socio economic development in Sokoto State.
Commandant Ajayi warned civil engineering firms, construction companies, and other developers to desist from carrying out excavation without proper utility surveys and verification of underground installations. He emphasised that negligence in this regard will no longer be tolerated.
During the interactive session, the Commandant explained that the protection of Critical National Assets and Infrastructure extends beyond telecommunications to include power, oil and gas, health, and energy sectors. He added that acts of vandalism against fibre optic cables, rail sleepers, power installations, cell towers, and manholes will attract strict sanctions.
He further disclosed that the Command will intensify public sensitisation through radio jingles and other media platforms to educate stakeholders and residents on the need to protect critical infrastructure across the state.
The State Command reassured stakeholders of its commitment to strengthening collaboration with telecommunications service providers to verify cable coordinates and ensure proper mapping of installations across Sokoto State. This partnership, he said, will enhance the overall security architecture of the state.
Commandant Ajayi also highlighted the importance of digital globalisation and its strong connection to national security and socio economic development. He stressed that telecommunications infrastructure plays a vital role in economic stability, access to classified information, and national growth.
He concluded by urging collective responsibility in protecting Critical National Assets and Infrastructure, describing them as essential foundations of the state’s socio economic progress.
