The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, in collaboration with the Department of State Services (DSS), has commenced investigations into the alleged illegal transportation of lithium ore in Kwara State.
The Ministry confirmed that documents obtained from the mining site, as well as materials recovered from trucks intercepted while allegedly conveying lithium ore unlawfully, have been taken into custody to aid ongoing investigations. Authorities said the items would be subjected to detailed scrutiny to establish their authenticity and the legality of the operation.
Speaking on the development, the Zonal Mine Officer, Engr. Ajibade, disclosed that the operation was reportedly accompanied by individuals who claimed to be mine marshals from Abuja. He noted that this claim is currently being examined by relevant authorities to determine its veracity.
Ajibade said the enforcement action was in line with the directive of the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, who has repeatedly emphasized a zero-tolerance stance on illegal mining and the theft of Nigeria’s mineral resources. He warned that surveillance and enforcement efforts would be intensified across the South-West and other regions, stressing the Federal Government’s resolve to sanitise the solid minerals sector and boost its contribution to national economic development.
