The Nigerian Navy, in collaboration with sister security agencies, has disrupted an alleged illegal recruitment and training scheme operating outside the framework of recognised laws and regulatory authorities in Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

The operation, conducted on 31 August 2026, was carried out by personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) JUBILEE, in collaboration with Headquarters 2 Brigade/Operation THUNDER, 6 Battalion of the Nigerian Army, and operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command.

The joint operation followed credible intelligence on the activities of a purported Nigeria Coast Guard Academy located in Uwa West, Essien Udim.

Acting on the intelligence, the security team raided the Merchant Seaman Academy, which was allegedly being used as a venue for the unauthorised recruitment and training of individuals presented as provisional cadets of the purported agency.

Preliminary findings indicated that the recruitment and training activities were neither authorised nor recognised under applicable laws, raising concerns that unsuspecting members of the public could be deceived or defrauded through false representations.

A total of 12 persons were arrested during the operation. They comprised six suspected organisers or officials, five recruits or trainees, and one cadet of the Merchant Seaman Academy.

The suspects were subsequently handed over to the Violent Crime Response Unit of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command for further investigation and necessary legal action.

The operation underscores the Nigerian Navy’s proactive efforts to identify and disrupt emerging security threats before they escalate into broader public-safety challenges.

It also highlights the importance of protecting Nigerians from individuals or organisations allegedly exploiting the legitimate aspirations of citizens seeking careers in the maritime and security sectors.

The Nigerian Navy, in collaboration with other security agencies, remains committed to safeguarding the public and preventing fraudulent or unauthorised recruitment activities that could expose unsuspecting Nigerians to exploitation.
