Seven Killed in Late-Night Attack on Plateau Community

At least seven people were killed in a late-night attack on Bum community in Chugwi, Vwang District of Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State, according to the resident’s association.

The incident occurred around 11 p.m. on Wednesday, 31 December 2025, as residents were preparing to celebrate the New Year.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Berom Youths Moulder Association (BYM) said the attackers stormed the community shortly after midnight, unleashing violence on unsuspecting residents. The statement, signed by the group’s National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong, described the assailants as armed militants or bandits.

“While much of the world welcomed the New Year in celebration, residents of Bum community were plunged into mourning following a deadly attack,” the group said.

The association condemned the killings and called on security agencies to act swiftly against those responsible. It also warned that repeated attacks on rural communities were increasing fear and insecurity in the area.

Efforts to reach the Plateau State Police Command spokesperson, Alfred Albo, were unsuccessful, as calls and messages went unanswered. The state Commissioner of Information, Joyce Ramnap, was also unavailable at the time of filing this report.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, although several armed groups have carried out similar incidents in Plateau State in recent years.

Despite government assurances that security measures are being strengthened, Plateau State has continued to experience fatal attacks, particularly targeting rural communities.

The New Year attack has raised further concerns about the safety of rural populations, many of whom remain vulnerable to armed groups.

Residents and local leaders continue to call for proactive security interventions to prevent further loss of lives and to restore a sense of safety in their communities.
