The Commander of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mining Marshals, ACC John Attah Onoja, has reaffirmed the unit’s commitment to intensifying operations against illegal mining activities across the country, pledging that the ongoing crackdown on criminal mining syndicates will be sustained.
Onoja stated that the Mining Marshals remain resolute in dismantling illegal mining networks that continue to exploit the nation’s mineral resources and undermine economic development. He noted that the special unit has recorded significant successes in identifying and disrupting illegal mining sites, arresting suspects, and preventing the illicit extraction and smuggling of valuable minerals.
According to him, illegal mining not only deprives the nation of much-needed revenue but also fuels criminal enterprises through illicit financial flows that support other unlawful activities. He stressed that the Mining Marshals would continue to work closely with relevant security agencies, host communities, and stakeholders in the solid minerals sector to safeguard Nigeria’s mineral resources and ensure compliance with mining regulations.
The commander further emphasized that the unit’s operations are aligned with the Federal Government’s drive to reform the mining sector, promote responsible mining practices, and attract legitimate investments. He warned that individuals and groups involved in illegal mining should either regularize their operations or face the full weight of the law.
Onoja commended the leadership of the NSCDC and the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development for their continued support, which has strengthened the capacity of the Mining Marshals to carry out their mandate effectively. He assured Nigerians that the unit would remain vigilant in protecting the nation’s mineral wealth from economic saboteurs and criminal cartels.
He also called on members of the public to provide credible information on illegal mining activities within their communities, noting that public cooperation remains crucial to the success of ongoing enforcement efforts. According to him, intelligence-driven operations and community engagement will continue to play a key role in identifying offenders, securing mining sites, and ensuring that Nigeria derives maximum economic benefits from its vast mineral resources.
