The Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, has been conferred with the Fellowship of the Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered) in recognition of his contributions to professional leadership, management and national service.
The conferment took place on Thursday, August 20, 2026, during an investiture ceremony held under the theme, “Leading Through Transformation: The Human Element in Modern Leadership.”
Speaking at the occasion, Vice Admiral Abbas expressed appreciation to the Governing Council, management and members of the Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered) for the honour, describing the Fellowship as both a recognition of his service and a renewed call to greater responsibility, continuous learning and commitment to national development.
The Chief of the Naval Staff said the theme of the ceremony was particularly relevant to the realities of contemporary leadership, noting that organisations today operate in an environment characterised by rapid technological advancement, expanding access to information and increasingly complex security and economic challenges.
He stressed that although technology, systems and modern infrastructure enhance organisational capabilities, people remain at the centre of every meaningful and sustainable transformation.
According to him, the principle is particularly important to the Armed Forces, where sophisticated platforms such as ships, aircraft, weapons systems and other military equipment can only deliver the desired results when operated by well-trained, motivated and committed personnel.
Vice Admiral Abbas therefore identified effective leadership, personnel development and welfare as critical elements in building a professional, motivated and mission-ready Nigerian Navy capable of delivering its constitutional responsibilities.
He noted that his Command Philosophy places strong emphasis on accountability, professionalism and personnel welfare, describing them as essential pillars for building an operationally effective Nigerian Navy committed to excellence in service to the nation.
The CNS further explained that effective leadership goes beyond issuing directives or managing resources. He said leaders must create an environment in which personnel understand the mission, accept responsibility, develop confidence and remain motivated to give their best in service.
He described the Fellowship as a reminder that leadership is a continuous journey of learning, reflection, responsibility and service, adding that the recognition would strengthen his resolve to uphold the principles of professionalism, ethical leadership and dedication to duty.
Vice Admiral Abbas also commended the Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered) for its longstanding contribution to the promotion of sound management practices and the development of competent leaders across Nigeria’s public and private sectors.
The Fellowship conferment on the Chief of the Naval Staff was held alongside the presentation of Merit Awards, Life Membership Awards and other Fellowships to distinguished Nigerians.
The Naval Chief reaffirmed the importance of purposeful and people-centred leadership in building strong, resilient institutions, stressing that the ultimate measure of leadership is the ability to leave people, institutions and the nation better than they were found.
