The Controller-General of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), CGF Samuel Adeyemi Olumode, has cautioned Nigerians against the use of fireworks and other fire-prone activities, especially during festive periods, due to the increased risk of fire outbreaks and loss of lives and property.
Speaking on behalf of the Controller-General, the Federal Fire Service expressed concern over the rising incidents of fires linked to careless handling of fireworks, open flames, faulty electrical connections and improper storage of flammable materials. The Service noted that such activities pose serious threats to public safety and often overwhelm emergency response efforts.
CGF Olumode urged parents, guardians and event organisers to discourage the use of fireworks by children and untrained persons, stressing that fireworks can easily trigger uncontrollable fires in residential areas, markets and public spaces. He advised the public to adopt safer alternatives for celebrations and to strictly observe basic fire safety rules at all times.
The Controller-General reaffirmed the commitment of the Federal Fire Service to safeguarding lives and property across the country through preparedness, rapid response and continuous public enlightenment. He encouraged citizens to promptly report any fire incident to the nearest fire station and to cooperate with fire officers, noting that collective responsibility is key to preventing
