The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced the implementation of robust security measures across Nigeria to prevent attacks and ensure peaceful Christmas celebrations.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, said the Armed Forces of Nigeria, working in collaboration with other security agencies, have intensified operations in identified vulnerable areas nationwide.
According to him, additional troops have been deployed to strategic locations and major routes, while special forces units and air support elements have been placed on high alert to guarantee rapid response to any security threats during the festive period.
Onoja explained that surveillance operations, including aerial monitoring and intelligence gathering, have been significantly enhanced to track the movements and communication patterns of suspected criminal groups.
He added that unit commanders have been directed to strengthen patrols, establish fortified checkpoints, and work closely with community leaders, local vigilante groups, and state security formations to improve intelligence sharing and security coverage.
The Defence Headquarters reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ commitment to protecting lives and property, stressing that national security and stability remain a top priority as citizens prepare to celebrate Christmas and the New Year.
Onoja also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by promptly reporting suspicious activities, assuring that all reports would be treated with urgency and confidentiality.
He further conveyed Christmas and New Year goodwill messages from the Chief of Defence Staff, General O.O. Oluyede, and encouraged the wide dissemination of the security advisory.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State Police Command has also announced enhanced security arrangements for the Yuletide season across the state.
In a statement, the command’s spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, said tactical units have been deployed to waterways, recreational centres, entry and exit points, motor parks, hotels, churches, mosques, and other identified hotspots to ensure a safe and orderly celebration.
She noted that the initiative, directed by the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, is part of a comprehensive security framework aimed at strengthening surveillance, ensuring visible policing, and enabling swift response to potential threats.
Iringe-Koko added that the police are working closely with traditional rulers, youth organisations, religious leaders, and other stakeholders to promote community engagement, early intelligence sharing, and crime prevention.
Residents were advised to take personal safety precautions, secure their homes, supervise children to avoid unsafe activities, and promptly report any suspicious behaviour to the nearest police station.
The Rivers State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property before, during, and after the Christmas celebrations, while extending warm Yuletide greetings to residents and wishing them a peaceful and prosperous New Year.
