The FCT Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Dr. Olusola Odumosu, has presented a paper titled “From Report to Response: How Cases of Attacks Against Female Journalists Are Handled” at a high-level training workshop in Entebbe, Uganda.
The workshop, organised by the International Association of Women in Radio and Television (IAWRT) in collaboration with UNESCO, brought together law enforcement officers, journalists and legal practitioners from across Africa to strengthen mechanisms for journalist safety.
With a central focus on “Monitoring and Reporting on the Safety of Journalists in Africa, with Particular Emphasis on Gender,” the programme explored trends, risks and response frameworks affecting media professionals across the continent.
Dr. Odumosu highlighted practical strategies for documenting cases of violence against female journalists, strengthening institutional response systems and improving collaboration between security agencies and the media.
He also emphasized the need for gender-sensitive training within law enforcement agencies, noting that protecting female journalists is essential for promoting press freedom, democratic accountability and inclusive reporting.
The session further underscored UNESCO’s continued commitment to ensuring the safety of journalists, while encouraging African countries to adopt stronger policies that deter attacks and ensure justice for victims.
