The Niger State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has confirmed the death of one of its officers during an attack at an illegal mining site in Korokpa Village.
According to a statement signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSC Abubakar M.R. Muti, the incident occurred on Wednesday, 22nd July, 2026 at about 2:00pm.
Operatives of the NSCDC Mining Marshal were on patrol when they were attacked by suspected illegal miners who resisted enforcement. The officers called for reinforcement, and during the operation, one officer was shot in the head.
He was rushed to hospital but died from his injuries.
The State Commandant, Comdt. Suberu Siyaka Aniviye, condemned the attack and described the deceased as a patriotic and courageous officer. He said the Command, in collaboration with other security agencies, is working to arrest those responsible.
The Command also urged residents to provide useful information to help curb illegal mining in the state.
