The Police Service Commission (PSC) has commended the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force for the effective and efficient deployment of officers and men during the Anambra State Governorship Election held today, Saturday, November 8, 2025.
The Commission noted that the overall performance of the Police was above average and contributed significantly to the credibility of the election, which it described as largely peaceful and orderly.
Monitors from the Commission deployed across Anambra State reported that Police officers conducted themselves professionally throughout the exercise.
Barrister Taiwo Lakanu, retired Deputy Inspector General of Police and leader of the PSC Monitoring Team, praised the Police for their efficient coordination and professional handling of election duties. He commended the Inspector General of Police, Dr. Olukayode Egbetokun, for ensuring that officers were well-equipped and adequately briefed to provide a conducive environment for a free and fair election.
DIG Lakanu, who personally visited several polling units, observed a calm and peaceful atmosphere across voting centers. “I witnessed voters exercising their franchise without fear. There were no incidents of ballot snatching in the areas I visited, and I was impressed with the orderliness at the polling units,” he stated.
He reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to supporting continuous improvement in Police performance during elections to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic process.
In Anambra North Senatorial Zone, Ferdinand Ekpe, mni, Director of the Department of Police Discipline at the Commission and head of the PSC monitoring team in the zone, also reported effective collaboration between the Police—Nigeria’s lead internal security agency—and other sister security agencies.
His team visited three wards and five polling units in Onitsha North Local Government Area; seven wards and ten polling units in Onitsha South; two wards and three polling units in Ogbaru; and four wards and six polling units in Oyi Local Government Area.
Similarly, in Anambra Central Senatorial Zone, the PSC team led by George Muruako, Deputy Director, Department of Police Investigation, observed a high level of professionalism and cooperation among security agencies. The team visited Agu-Awka Ward, covering Aroma Junction Polling Units 1 and 2, Esther Obiakor Estate, Ministry of Lands Polling Unit, and Nwakpadolu Polling Unit.
In Anaocha Local Government Area, they monitored Agulu Ezigbo Units 1 and 2, and Azunano Units 1 and 2, noting the presence of an average of three to five police officers at each polling unit, supported by personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
In Anambra South Senatorial Zone, the PSC monitoring team was led by Mrs. Justina Okurubonye, Deputy Director, Department of Police Investigation. The team covered five of the seven local government areas in the zone, including Orumba North (8 units), Ihiala (8 units), Ekwusigo (7 units), and Nnewi North (10 units).
The team reported that Police officers across the zone displayed professionalism, were easily identifiable by their name tags, and maintained order throughout the exercise.
