Major General Waidi Shaibu, the new Chief of Army Staff of the Nigerian Army, stands as one of the finest examples of courage, intellect, and professional discipline in the service of his nation. Born on 18 December 1971 in Olamaboro Local Government Area of Kogi State, his journey from the quiet hills of his hometown to the commanding corridors of the Army Headquarters is a story of focus, dedication, and an unbroken passion for excellence.

He began his military career in 1989, when he was admitted into the prestigious Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna, as a member of the 41 Regular Course. On 17 September 1994, he was commissioned into the Nigerian Army Armour Corps as a Second Lieutenant, marking the beginning of a distinguished military career that would span more than three decades of service to the Nigerian state.

An officer of rare intellect, Major General Shaibu is both a scholar and a strategist. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Nigerian Defence Academy, a Postgraduate Certificate in Public Administration from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, and multiple Master’s Degrees — in Public Administration from the University of Calabar, in Strategic Studies from the University of Ibadan, and in Security and Strategic Studies from the National Defence University in Washington, D.C., United States. He is also an alumnus of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, where he completed the Leadership for the 21st Century Programme, and holds an Advanced Executive Certificate in Applied Leadership and Strategy from the National Productivity Senior Executive Programme. Currently, he is pursuing a Doctorate in Strategic Studies at the University of Ibadan.

Over the years, Major General Shaibu has attended and completed several local and international military and professional courses. Among these are the Young Officers Courses in Armour and Infantry, the Company Amphibious Operation Course in Calabar, the Platoon Commanders Course, and the Senior and Junior Staff Courses at the Nigerian Army Schools. He also completed the Counter Terrorism Fellows Programme at the College of International Security Affairs in Washington, D.C., which deepened his global understanding of military strategy and counter-insurgency operations.

Throughout his career, he has played critical roles in both national and international operations. His service record includes participation in Operations Harmony, Boyona, Zaman Lafiya, Lafiya Dole, Tura Takaibango, Hadin Kai, Desert, and Lake Sanity. Internationally, he served with distinction in the African Mission in Sudan, the United Nations Mission in Liberia, and Nigeria’s Foreign Training Assistance Mission to Liberia. In all, he demonstrated calm leadership, firm judgment, and tactical precision.

Major General Shaibu has held several key command, instructional, and staff appointments. He has served as Platoon Commander of the 245 Recce Battalion, Aide-de-Camp to the General Officer Commanding 3 Division, Chief Instructor at the Nigerian Army Armour School, Director Coordination and Directing Staff at the National Defence College, Chief of Staff of the 23 Brigade Headquarters in Yola, Commander of the 21 Special Armoured Brigade in Bama, and General Officer Commanding the 7 Division and Commander of Sector 1, Operation Hadin Kai. He also served as Theatre Commander of the Joint Task Force in the North East and, until his appointment as Chief of Army Staff, was the Director of Armour Research at the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre.

His service has not gone unnoticed. Major General Shaibu has received numerous military honours, including the Distinguished Service Star, the Distinguished Service Order, the Foreign Training Assistance Medal, the Field Command Medal, the Field Command Medal of Honour, the Command Medal, the General Operations Medal, the Defence Operations Medal, and the Purple Heart Medal for his gallantry and sacrifices in counter-insurgency operations. He is a Fellow of the National Defence College and a member of the Nigerian Institute of Management.

Away from the battlefield, Major General Waidi Shaibu is a quiet thinker, a man of balance and purpose. He enjoys reading, early morning walks, and personal reflection. Above all, he is a devoted family man, happily married, and blessed with children.

His appointment as Chief of Army Staff comes at a defining moment in Nigeria’s security landscape, a time that calls for courage, innovation, and steadfast leadership. With his rich blend of operational experience, academic depth, and integrity, Major General Shaibu represents the new face of Nigeria’s Army leadership: calm under pressure, deliberate in command, and deeply loyal to the ideals of peace and national unity.
