The Kwara State Government has dismissed reports suggesting that bandits have taken control of nine local government areas in the state, describing the claims as false and misleading.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Communications, Mrs. Bolanle Olukoju, the government also accused opposition figures, including Mr. Peter Obi, of using their platforms to spread fake news about the security situation in Kwara State.
“We wish to alert the public to some reckless claims that nine local government areas of Kwara State are under siege by bandits. This is completely untrue. No part of the state is under the control of bandits,” the statement said.
Mrs. Olukoju noted that while there had been isolated security challenges in a few communities, they were not severe enough to justify the wicked exaggeration being circulated online.
“We have reasonable grounds to believe that those spreading these falsehoods are online sympathisers of criminal elements who deliberately aim to create panic and undermine public confidence,” she added.
The statement further expressed disappointment in Mr. Peter Obi, accusing him of sharing the unverified claim on his social media platforms.
“It is regrettable that Mr. Peter Obi has used his verified social media accounts to promote this fake news. Such conduct is unbecoming of a statesman. We urge him to delete the post immediately as it is false and capable of causing unnecessary fear,” the statement continued.
The commissioner appealed to members of the public to verify information before sharing, warning that spreading false reports could heighten anxiety and complicate the efforts of security agencies working to maintain peace.
“This kind of irresponsible behaviour only makes the work of our security agencies more difficult. We therefore call on citizens to support government efforts by rejecting and reporting fake news,” the statement concluded.
