A British Airways flight from London to Abuja was forced to make an emergency landing in Barcelona, Spain, after a passenger identified as a retired Air Vice Marshal of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) died mid-flight.
The Anambra State-born retired senior officer, who was reportedly terminally ill, was being flown back to Nigeria for further medical treatment before his sudden demise.
According to sources, the aircraft made an emergency landing at El Prat Airport in Barcelona as crew members and medical personnel on board struggled to resuscitate the ailing former military officer.
Details about the deceased passenger and the exact circumstances surrounding his death remained unclear as of press time.
Confirming the incident, the British Airways Regional Commercial Manager for Nigeria and Ghana, Mrs. Tutu Otuyalo, said the deceased passenger had been terminally ill.
The flight, which departed London’s Heathrow Airport at 11:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 5, was scheduled to land in Abuja at 5:00 a.m. on Monday but was diverted to Barcelona following the medical emergency.
It was gathered that the retired Air Vice Marshal was being transported back to Abuja for continued medical attention before his sudden death.
British Airways has apologised to passengers affected by the incident, while arrangements were made for a replacement aircraft to depart Barcelona Airport at 2:00 p.m. on Monday. The passengers were expected to arrive in Abuja at about 7:00 p.m. local time.
In messages sent to the affected passengers, the airline expressed regret over the disruption and assured that its Customer Care team would be available to provide assistance.
“Passengers are advised to expect an email with more information and may contact the airline’s Live Chat feature for support. British Airways acknowledges the inconvenience and appreciates passengers’ patience and understanding,” the message read.
