In line with global efforts to promote environmental sustainability, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Sokoto State Command, under the leadership of Commandant CC E.A. Ajayi, has launched a tree planting initiative aimed at conserving the ecosystem and enhancing socio-economic prosperity.
The exercise, which began on Tuesday, 2nd September 2025, involved the planting of various fruit-bearing and socio-economically beneficial trees such as mango, moringa, cashew, and guava by officers and men of the Command.
While addressing participants during the exercise, Commandant Ajayi emphasized the critical role of trees in maintaining a balanced ecosystem, stating:
“Fruit trees are essential components of the environment. They not only improve ecological health but also foster social cohesion and offer economic value.”
Reaffirming the NSCDC’s commitment to eco-friendly practices and climate change mitigation, Commandant Ajayi encouraged all officers to embrace environmental responsibility, noting that such efforts will yield lasting benefits for future generations.
As part of the directive, the Commandant instructed the 29 Divisional Officers across the state to plant at least three different species of trees each, to support the initiative’s overall objectives.
He further highlighted the numerous benefits of fruit trees, including:
- Promoting biodiversity
- Supporting cultural and aesthetic values
- Providing nutritious food sources
- Enhancing landscape beauty
- Creating green and serene environments for healthier and more sustainable living
The exercise was a resounding success, transforming the NSCDC State Command’s landscape with a vibrant display of seedlings and fruit trees—marking a significant step toward environmental rejuvenation in Sokoto State.
