NASENI, Nigerian Air Force deepen partnership on indigenous defense technologies

A renewed spirit of collaboration is shaping Nigeria’s defense and aerospace ambitions, as the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) and the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) deepen their longstanding partnership aimed at advancing indigenous technology.

On July 25, 2025, both institutions formalized a fresh Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during a high-level visit to NASENI headquarters in Abuja’s Idu Industrial Layout. The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, led a delegation of top Air Force officers, warmly received by NASENI’s Executive Vice Chairman/CEO, Mr. Khalil Suleiman Halilu, and his management team.

While addressing the gathering, Air Marshal Abubakar commended NASENI’s strides under Halilu’s leadership, especially in areas such as reverse engineering and localized manufacturing of critical engineering components. He made special reference to NASENI’s key contributions to the C5 Rocket Project, noting its role in fabricating rocket casings, structural parts, and providing precision material analysis.

He further hailed the establishment of the NASENI Northwest Technology Innovation Hub at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), Kaduna, describing it as a milestone initiative, made possible with land support provided by the Nigerian Air Force.

Proposing stronger institutional integration, the Air Marshal advocated for NASENI to be recognized as a co-owner of the C5 Rocket Project. He encouraged the agency to sustain its lead in rocket body production, while also working towards reducing production costs. Additionally, he extended an invitation for NASENI to participate in new research and development training modules at NAF’s R&D Institute, including collaborations on CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining capacity building for Air Force personnel at NASENI’s Centre of Excellence.

In response, Mr. Halilu reaffirmed NASENI’s unwavering commitment to the Nigerian Air Force, describing the collaboration as one of the most seamless and productive relationships the agency has cultivated in recent times. He highlighted several areas where the partnership has already yielded tangible results — from shared innovation hubs to reverse-engineering breakthroughs.

“We’ve made remarkable progress together, and this is only the beginning,” Halilu remarked. He emphasized NASENI’s ongoing projects in Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) development, drone pilot training programs, asset recovery solutions, and CNC machining operations. He invited the Air Force to tap into the agency’s growing infrastructure and specialized technical expertise.

Mr. Halilu also spotlighted NASENI’s hybrid collaboration model, which combines public-sector mandates with private-sector dynamism — a framework he believes drives cost-effective innovation while making cutting-edge technologies more accessible to public institutions such as the Nigerian Air Force.

According to him, the renewed MoU is not just symbolic; it is a practical roadmap anchored in measurable outcomes and aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. Core priorities include joint research and development, local production of defense and aerospace components, skilled manpower development, and an open exchange of technical knowledge.

“This collaboration goes far beyond documents,” Halilu asserted. “It’s about building a sustainable foundation for Nigeria’s defense and technological future.”

With the formal signing now complete, both institutions are set to implement joint action plans across key areas including the C5 Rocket Project, CNC training initiatives, defense manufacturing programs, and a wide range of innovation-focused endeavors.
