The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Jigawa State Command, has arrested a 38-year-old man, Basiru Yushe’u, for allegedly vandalising iron wire from a bridge located at Bakin Gada in Auyo Local Government Area.
This was disclosed in a statement released on Wednesday in Dutse by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Badruddeen Tijjani. According to the statement, the arrest was made on Friday, July 18, 2025, following a distress call that alerted NSCDC operatives to the incident.
The suspect was apprehended while attempting to sell the stolen iron material, prompting a swift response from the Corps. Tijjani noted that the arrest highlights the efficiency of the NSCDC’s surveillance and rapid response system.
During preliminary investigation, the suspect reportedly admitted to the act. He claimed he was fishing when he discovered the bridge wire, cut it using a metal handsaw, hid it, and later transported it to a scrap dealer for sale.
The suspect is currently in custody and will be prosecuted upon the conclusion of investigations.
The Command described the act as a grave threat to public safety and the integrity of vital infrastructure. It further issued a stern warning to individuals and groups involved in acts of vandalism to desist or risk facing the full weight of the law.
Meanwhile, the State Commandant of the NSCDC, Bala Bawa Bodinga, commended the officers who responded to the incident, reiterating the Corps’ unwavering commitment to protecting critical national assets and infrastructure across Jigawa State.
He also urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities in their communities, stressing that public cooperation is essential to preventing acts of vandalism and other crimes.
The Command reaffirmed its resolve to ensure that anyone found guilty of vandalism will face the full consequences of their actions, noting that such crimes pose serious risks to both the economy and public safety.
