Operatives of the Nigerian Navy have intercepted a large consignment of smuggled foreign rice along the Epe-Ijebu-Ode Expressway, seizing 213 bags of the contraband and handing them over to the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) for further investigation.
The operation, carried out by the Naval Base Epe, was detailed in a press briefing by Commander Chukwudi Chukwugozie Atuba, who disclosed that the smugglers abandoned their vehicles and fled into the bush upon sighting naval personnel.
“In the course of executing our duties, our team intercepted six vehicles loaded with smuggled foreign rice. The suspects, upon seeing our operatives, abandoned their vehicles and escaped,” Commander Atuba stated.
Emphasizing the Navy’s commitment to combating smuggling and other illegal activities, he warned criminal elements to steer clear of the region.
“The Nigerian Navy, in alignment with the mission and vision of Vice Admiral Ikechukwu Ogala, remains steadfast in eradicating all forms of illegal activities in our jurisdiction,” he declared.
Commander Atuba further stressed the importance of collaboration between security agencies, highlighting the official handover of the confiscated goods to the NCS for appropriate action.
The handover was conducted by Navy Lieutenant AS Bello, who transferred the 213 bags of foreign rice to Deputy Comptroller Odoemenah, representing Comptroller Olajide of the Federal Operations Unit, Zone A, Ikeja.
The January 22, 2025, interception was based on credible intelligence reports indicating the movement of smuggled goods in the area.
“The Nigerian Navy remains vigilant and committed to ridding the maritime and surrounding environments of illegal activities,” Atuba reiterated.
Security officials have urged smugglers to desist from their activities, warning that intensified patrols will continue to disrupt illegal trade routes in the region.
