ARMY HEADQUARTERS DEPARTMENTS AND COMMANDS 2024 WASA: A CELEBRATION OF CULTURE, UNITY, AND CAMARADERIE

Last weekend, accompanying the Director General of the Nigerian Army Resource Centre (NARC), Major General GA Wahab (rtd), PhD, I had the distinct privilege of attending the Army Headquarters Departments and Commands 2024 West African Social Activities (WASA) at Mogadishu Cantonment, Abuja, on the kind invitation of the organizers.

The event was graced by the former Chief of Defence Staff, General LEO Irabor (rtd) CFR GSS, as the Special Guest of Honour, while the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General OO Oluyede mni NAM, served as the Chief Host. The hosting formation was the Army Headquarters Garrison, commanded by Major General Koko Isoni, and the occasion was a spectacular showcase of the Nigerian Army’s rich cultural heritage and its tradition of fostering unity.

WASA, an annual tradition in Army formations and units, creates a relaxed social atmosphere where officers, soldiers, their families and invited guests come together to enjoy food, drinks, and cultural displays. This year’s event stood out for its vibrancy, featuring captivating cultural dances, a mega suya feast, Nigerian cuisine, displays by a detachment of Women Corps Bike riders, tug-of-war competitions, the beating of the retreat, and the lighting of a campfire.

The evening also included the presentation of prizes and awards to formations and units that excelled in the suya and traditional cuisine competitions, as well as to soldiers who distinguished themselves in their duties throughout the year.

The well-attended event was a remarkable celebration of culture, achievement, and camaraderie. For me, and undoubtedly for many others, it was a truly memorable and unforgettable occasion.
