Police vow to enforce third party insurance compliance in A’Ibom from February 1

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command says it will soon commence the enforcement of third party insurance policy compliance in the state.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, said in a statement in Uyo, the state capital, on Sunday that the enforcement would commence on February 1.

John said that the enforcement was in compliance with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Dr Kayode Egbetokun.

She said that enforcement was also in line with Section 68 of the Insurance Act and Section 312 of the 1945 Motor Vehicle Third Party Insurance Act.

The police spokesman stated that third party insurance was a legal requirement for all private vehicle owners to operate their vehicles on public roads.

She said that the exercise was designed to protect road users, ensure accountability and promote compliance with traffic laws.

“From Feb.1, all vehicles found without valid third party insurance will be seized and taken to the nearest police station.

“Such vehicles will only be released upon the presentation of valid insurance documents.

“The command warns all officers participating in the exercise to avoid unprofessional conducts, particularly extortion,” she said.

The third-party insurance is a mandatory policy that covers legal liabilities for injuries, deaths, or property damage caused to others in an accident involving your vehicle. While it protects against third-party claims, it does not cover damages to your own vehicle or injuries to the policyholder.
