The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has inspected the Bell Textron production facility in Amarillo, Texas, United States, as manufacturing officially commenced on the AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters being acquired by Nigeria under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme.The visit marked a significant milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its air combat capabilities and enhance operational effectiveness in the fight against terrorism, insurgency and other emerging security threats.During the visit, the NAF delegation toured the production line where the advanced attack helicopters are being assembled and participated in a ceremonial signing of the airframe of the first AH-1Z Viper designated for Nigeria.Speaking at the event, Bell’s H-1 Programme Director, Scott Sims, described the occasion as a major achievement in the partnership between the company and the Nigerian Air Force.According to him, the first production aircraft will symbolise the collective commitment and dedication of all stakeholders involved in bringing the project to fruition.”We are honoured to host the Nigerian Air Force and celebrate this important milestone in the production of the AH-1Z Viper aircraft for Nigeria,” Sims said.The AH-1Z Viper is regarded as one of the world’s most advanced attack helicopters, designed to deliver precision strike capabilities, battlefield flexibility and enhanced operational effectiveness across a broad spectrum of military missions.The platform is capable of deploying both precision guided and conventional munitions while maintaining a high operational tempo in austere environments with minimal logistical demands.NAF spokesperson, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, said the acquisition of the helicopters would significantly bolster Nigeria’s counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations.He noted that the aircraft would provide the Air Force with enhanced firepower, improved interoperability and greater operational reach in support of national security objectives.According to Ejodame, the AH-1Z Viper will become a critical component of the Nigerian Air Force attack helicopter fleet and will strengthen efforts to protect lives, secure communities and defend the nation’s territorial integrity.”The Bell AH-1Z Viper will play a vital role in strengthening our counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations while enhancing our ability to safeguard the people and territorial sovereignty of Nigeria,” he stated.The acquisition forms part of a defence agreement under which Bell Textron will manufacture and deliver 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters to Nigeria, alongside engineering support, programme management services and comprehensive logistics assistance.Production of the aircraft is being undertaken at Bell’s Assembly Centre in Amarillo, Texas, with deliveries expected to be completed by early 2029.The project represents a major investment in the modernisation of Nigeria’s air power capabilities and reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to equipping the Armed Forces with advanced platforms required to confront contemporary security challenges.Bell Textron further reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s defence requirements, noting that thousands of personnel across its global operations remain dedicated to ensuring the successful delivery of the aircraft programme.The induction of the AH-1Z Viper helicopters is expected to further enhance the Nigerian Air Force’s operational readiness and strengthen its capacity to conduct precision air operations in support of national and regional security objectives.
