The newly posted Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Niger State Command, Abdulhamid Salisu Kabara, has warned that illegal mining remains a major security threat to the state despite the recent incident that claimed the lives of 34 miners.
Kabara raised the concern on Tuesday during a familiarisation visit to the Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, at his office in Minna. The NSCDC commandant stressed the need for stronger measures to address illegal mining, noting that activities associated with unregulated mining operations pose serious threats to public safety, security and the environment.
He underscored the importance of collaboration among security agencies, government institutions and relevant stakeholders in tackling the menace. The visit was part of Kabara’s efforts to establish working relationships with key government officials and institutions following his deployment to Niger State.
The recent deaths of miners in the state have renewed concerns over illegal mining, the safety of mining operations and the need for effective enforcement of existing regulations.
Kabara’s warning highlights the urgency of sustained action against illegal mining and the need for coordinated efforts to prevent further loss of lives and protect communities affected by the activities of unauthorised mining operators.
