The Federal Fire Service has issued a public safety advisory warning of an increased risk of flooding across several states as the rainy season intensifies. The alert follows a Federal Government notice identifying vulnerable areas, including Lagos, Bayelsa, Delta, Adamawa, Kebbi, and the Federal Capital Territory.

In the advisory, the Service called for heightened vigilance among residents, particularly those living in flood prone communities, stressing the need for early precautionary measures to prevent loss of life and property damage. It urged the public to maintain clear drainage systems and desist from dumping refuse in waterways, noting that blocked channels significantly increase flood risks.

The agency also cautioned against walking or driving through flooded areas, warning that such actions could lead to drowning or accidents. Residents were further advised to switch off electricity and gas supplies during flooding and to exercise caution before restoring power, as damaged electrical systems may pose serious hazards.

In addition, the Service highlighted the dangers associated with improper generator use and faulty electrical appliances, urging households to operate generators only in well ventilated outdoor spaces and to avoid overloading sockets. It also advised that flammable materials should be stored safely away from heat sources.

The Federal Fire Service confirmed that it has placed its operational units on red alert to ensure prompt emergency response and rescue operations. Members of the public were urged to contact the nearest fire station in cases of flooding, distress, or drowning incidents.

Emergency lines provided by the Service include 112 and 0803 200 3557, while officials emphasised that public cooperation remains critical to reducing risks and preventing avoidable disasters during the rainy season.
