NSCDC Leads Stakeholders to Safeguard Telecom Infrastructure in Gombe

In a decisive move to protect critical national assets, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Gombe State Command, has convened a high-level stakeholders meeting aimed at strengthening the protection of fibre optic cables and telecommunications infrastructure across the state.
The meeting, led by the State Commandant, Jibrin Idris, was held at the Command Headquarters in Gombe. It followed a directive from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), communicated through the NSCDC Commandant General, mandating stricter measures to prevent damage to telecom infrastructure during construction activities.
The gathering brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from the State Ministry of Works and Transport, major telecommunications companies, and construction firms operating within the state. Among those present were officials from Airtel, 9mobile, MTN, as well as project coordinators from construction companies such as Datum and Triacta.
Discussions centred on the growing concern over the frequent accidental damage to fibre optic cables and underground telecommunications facilities during excavation and maintenance works. Participants noted that such incidents often lead to communication disruptions, economic losses, and, in some cases, serious national security risks.
At the end of the meeting, stakeholders agreed on several key measures, including the full adoption of the “Call Before You Dig” protocol for all excavation projects, the establishment of a coordinated notification and response system among contractors and telecom operators, and the development of clear operational guidelines for mapping, protecting, and monitoring fibre optic infrastructure.
They also emphasised the need for stronger collaboration between government agencies, telecom providers, and regulatory bodies, alongside the enforcement of strict accountability measures against negligent or unauthorised excavation practices.
The resolutions reached at the meeting are expected to form the foundation of a comprehensive state-level operational framework designed to safeguard digital and communication infrastructure in Gombe State, ensuring improved service delivery and enhanced national security.
