Gunmen on Wednesday night shot a farmer and abducted his wife in Akure, the capital of Ondo State.
The incident was confirmed by the spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force in the state, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, in a statement released on Thursday.
Jimoh explained that the attack occurred at about 8:45 pm along Oda Road.
According to him, suspected kidnappers invaded the residence of a tomato farmer identified as Adesida Daniel in Isagba Community along the road.
During the attack, the farmer sustained a gunshot wound to his right hand while attempting to resist the armed men who abducted his wife.
The police spokesperson stated that officers responded quickly after receiving a distress call. He said police operatives were immediately deployed to the scene where they rescued the injured farmer and rushed him to the police clinic for treatment while security personnel secured the area.
Jimoh added that the Commissioner of Police in the state has ordered intensified patrol operations, bush combing exercises and intelligence gathering in the affected community and nearby areas to track down the suspects.
He assured residents that security agencies are making every effort to arrest the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
The police also urged members of the public to remain alert and report any suspicious persons or movements to the nearest police station.
The incident has heightened security concerns in several parts of Ondo State where kidnapping and attacks on farmers have been reported in recent years, particularly in rural communities and along remote roads. Security agencies have continued to strengthen patrols and search operations in response to such threats.
