The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested a 26-year-old teacher, Udeme, over his alleged involvement in the February 24 gunfire incident targeting former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and other opposition figures in Benin City, Edo State. The suspect is also accused of issuing threats against the politician.
This arrest represents the first major breakthrough in the investigation following the tense attack, which sparked national debate as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections.
A top security source confirmed the development, telling reporters on Monday: “Yes, it is true.”
Investigations revealed that DSS operatives acted after Udeme allegedly posted threatening messages on his X account, claiming responsibility for the attack and issuing further threats. In one post, the suspect reportedly wrote:
“We warned Obi against entering Edo State, but he mistook our resolve for his Obidiots online noise. Thank his stars he survived this one. I hear he’s going to Rivers State. My men will handle that, and they never miss. Speak no peace to a bastard and wish him no long life, for he’s destined to die.”
Forensic analysis played a key role in tracking down the suspect, who was apprehended in a covert operation. He remains in DSS custody and is expected to face charges in court.
A senior security official explained: “Our forensic investigations directly implicated the suspect. The DSS, as a responsible security organisation charged with counter-espionage and VIP protection, acts on credible intelligence without regard to tribe or religion. Operatives were deployed swiftly, and the man who threatened Peter Obi has been apprehended.”
The February 24 attack occurred shortly after Obi, former Edo State governor and ex-APC national chairman John Odigie-Oyegun, and leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) attended a political meeting in Benin. Armed assailants reportedly fired at Oyegun’s GRA residence after following the convoy from the ADC secretariat on Ogbelaka Street.
The attackers fired at the gate, vehicles, and parts of the compound before fleeing when security personnel responded. No injuries were reported.
Allies of Obi and leaders of the Obidient Movement described the attack as a planned assassination attempt, criticizing lapses in security. The Edo State Government, however, dismissed claims of official involvement, labeling the accusations politically motivated.
The Nigeria Police had earlier confirmed receiving distress calls and reinforcing security in the area while investigations were ongoing.
With Udeme in custody, security agencies emphasize that the investigation remains active as authorities work to determine whether other individuals were involved in the Benin gunfire incident.
