The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Sokoto State Command, has commenced a week-long series of activities to commemorate the 2026 International Civil Defence Organisation (ICDO) Day, celebrated globally every March 1.
The activities began on Sunday, February 22, 2026, in line with this year’s theme, “Managing Environmental Risks for a Resilient and Sustainable Future.” The theme focuses on strengthening public awareness of environmental safety, disaster mitigation, emergency response, and community resilience in the face of natural and man-made disasters.
As part of the flag-off activities, the Command organized special prayer sessions for both Christian and Muslim faithful at the State Headquarters’ prayer ground. The Christian thanksgiving service was held on February 22, while special Jumat prayers took place on February 27, 2026. The prayers were offered for the continued progress of the Corps, as well as for peace, unity, and national development.
In addition, officers and men of the Command embarked on community engagement and public sensitization campaigns across the state. During the outreach, residents were educated on environmental risk management, safety consciousness, and the statutory responsibilities of the Corps, particularly in safeguarding critical national assets and infrastructure. The communities expressed appreciation for the NSCDC’s sustained efforts in promoting public safety.
Addressing journalists on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, the State Commandant, CC EA Ajayi, described the International Civil Defence Organization as a global body dedicated to enhancing civil protection against natural and man-made disasters during humanitarian crises. He noted that the organisation, which traces its origin to 1931, comprises 55 member states, including Nigeria, and adopted March 1 as the official date for the annual celebration.
The Commandant emphasized that this year’s theme underscores the urgent need for proactive measures to tackle environmental challenges such as flooding, fire outbreaks, pollution, and other hazards that threaten public safety and sustainable development. He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to strengthening disaster preparedness and response mechanisms, enhancing collaboration with relevant stakeholders and sister agencies, promoting environmental safety awareness, and encouraging community participation in mitigation efforts.
As part of its humanitarian initiatives, the Command also conducted a free medical outreach, which recorded a large turnout of residents. The outreach was supported by medical professionals, including ophthalmologists from the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, whose contributions ensured the smooth delivery of healthcare services to the public.
The grand finale of the celebration is scheduled for Monday, March 2, 2026. It will feature engagements with non-governmental organisations aimed at advancing the Sustainable Development Goals through effective coordination and collaboration in protecting lives and property. A strategic lecture on disaster mitigation and environmental preparedness will also be delivered in line with the 2026 ICDO theme.
