The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Sokoto State Command, has issued a stern warning to construction firms and developers over the indiscriminate excavation of roads and sites that has led to repeated damage to fibre optic cables and other critical infrastructure across the state.
In a press release dated February 21, 2026, and referenced AAS 15 NSCDC PRU SSC VOL.27.6, the Command said the persistent disruption of telecommunications services has largely been traced to the destruction of fibre optic installations along road construction corridors.
The statement, issued by the Public Relations Unit, explained that the action aligns with the 2024 Critical National Assets and Infrastructure Protection Policy under the directive of the Office of the National Security Adviser, which mandates the Corps to safeguard critical national assets, including telecommunications infrastructure.
Speaking at a strategic meeting with key stakeholders, the State Commandant, EA Ajayi, stressed the urgent need to curb indiscriminate excavation by civil engineering and construction firms operating within the state.
He noted that the continued destruction of fibre optic cables disrupts internet services, banking operations, commercial activities, and other essential utilities, thereby undermining socio economic development in Sokoto State.
Ajayi urged all construction companies and relevant agents to desist from carrying out excavation without conducting proper utility surveys and verifying underground installations before commencing work.
During the interactive session, the Commandant said the protection of critical infrastructure goes beyond the telecommunications sector and extends to power, oil and gas, health, and energy facilities. He warned that acts of vandalism affecting fibre optic cables, rail components, power installations, cell towers, and manholes would not be tolerated.
He added that the Command would intensify public sensitisation through radio programmes and other media platforms to educate residents and stakeholders on the importance of protecting critical national assets and infrastructure.
The Command assured stakeholders of its commitment to collaborating with telecommunications service providers to verify installation coordinates across the state. According to the statement, this partnership is expected to strengthen the overall security architecture and ensure better protection of vital infrastructure.
Ajayi further emphasised that in an era of digital globalisation, telecommunications infrastructure plays a central role in national security, economic stability, and development. He concluded by calling for collective responsibility in protecting critical national assets, describing them as the backbone of the nation’s growth and stability.
