The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Olufemi Oluyede, has formally operationalised the Joint Task Force North Central Operation Savannah Shield at the 22 Brigade, Sobi Cantonment, Ilorin, Kwara State. The intelligence-driven mission is designed to dismantle terrorist networks, kidnappers, and other criminal groups threatening Kwara State and parts of neighbouring Niger State.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, General Oluyede described the operation as a deliberate and coordinated offensive rather than a routine deployment. He stated that the Armed Forces are committed to denying criminal elements freedom of action and restoring lasting peace across the North Central region.
According to the CDS, troops under the operation will dominate vulnerable corridors, dismantle forest enclaves used as criminal hideouts, and secure critical agricultural belts. He added that the protection of lives and property across the operational theatre remains a top priority.
Oluyede further emphasised the need for enhanced inter-agency collaboration, noting that success would depend on seamless cooperation among the Armed Forces, security agencies, and intelligence services. He urged communities, traditional rulers, and youth groups to provide timely and credible intelligence to support ongoing military efforts.
He confirmed the appointment of Major General Yakubu Yahaya as the Theatre Commander, tasked with overseeing integrated operations under the Joint Task Force. The CDS said the leadership structure reflects the Armed Forces’ determination to achieve decisive and measurable security outcomes.
In his remarks, Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, described the deployment as strategic and timely in view of rising security threats in Kwara North and adjoining areas. He commended President Bola Tinubu and the defence leadership for their proactive response, expressing confidence that the operation would restore public confidence, secure farming communities, and accelerate peace and economic development across the state.
